From Speculation to Engineering: The Requirements-Led Case for Nuclear Propulsion
The LucidCatalyst team, working with Lloyd's Register and Seaspan, have established the first comprehensive technical foundation for nuclear-powered container ships — and the results are published in the Baltic Transport Journal.
The headline finding: a nuclear-powered 15,000-TEU containership would not merely match conventional vessels on economics. It would fundamentally outperform them. A nuclear vessel eliminates roughly $30–50 million in annual fuel costs per ship, avoids $18 million or more in carbon penalties, operates almost 40% faster than slow-steaming VLSFO vessels, and delivers around 30% higher annual cargo capacity. That is a superior commercial proposition.
But the more important shift is conceptual. By defining rigorous functional requirements before selecting reactor technology, this work transforms nuclear propulsion from an open-ended research question into a defined engineering challenge. The result is a framework that is intrinsically safe, commercially realistic, and ready to guide subsequent concept design, shipyard engagement, and supply chain strategy.
